Irish Police investigating criminal activity on the dark web make two arrests

Police from the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB) have today carried out planned searches at two residential properties in a rural area of west Mayo County.

The operation formed part of an intelligence-led investigation into criminal activity on the Darkweb.

During the course of the operation, a male and a female, both aged in their 30s, were arrested for alleged offences including unlawful use of a computer, contrary to Section 9 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001 and money laundering, contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Offences) Act 2010.

Both were taken to a garda station in Mayo County, where they are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A quantity of suspected cannabis herb was seized at the scene, along with a significant volume of electronic exhibits, which will undergo forensic examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
